When people think about horror video games today, titles like Resident Evil or Silent Hill usually come to mind. But before those big names defined the genre, there was a little-known arcade game from 1986 called Chiller. This game shocked players with its gruesome imagery, over-the-top violence, and unapologetic horror theme. It didn’t become a massive hit, but it made a lasting impact as one of the most controversial arcade games ever released.
Chiller was developed by Exidy, a company known for pushing boundaries with their games. Unlike most arcade machines of the time, which were designed to be fun, colorful, and family-friendly, Chiller leaned hard into horror. The game put players in a dungeon setting armed with a light gun. Instead of fighting monsters, the targets were human prisoners strapped to medieval torture devices. The objective wasn’t survival or escape—it was to rack up points by shooting off limbs, decapitating victims, and triggering gruesome traps. For 1986, this was unheard of.
The game’s extreme violence quickly caused controversy. Many arcades refused to carry it, and some communities pushed to have it banned. Parents and critics were outraged that such a graphic game could sit next to titles like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Even by today’s standards, the imagery feels shocking, which shows just how far ahead of its time it was. But at the same time, Chiller developed a cult following among horror fans who appreciated its boldness.
Because it was so graphic, Chiller never achieved mainstream success in arcades, but it later gained new life through home console ports. The Nintendo Entertainment System had an unofficial version released in the late 1980s, which only added to its notoriety. Collectors today often hunt down both the arcade cabinets and the NES cartridges, making it a strange but important part of horror gaming history.
So why does Chiller matter? Beyond the shock factor, it opened the door for future horror games by proving that players wanted more than just fun—they wanted to be scared, disturbed, and challenged. While games like Mortal Kombat and Doom would later dominate the controversy around video game violence, Chiller helped set the stage for those debates.
That’s just a glimpse of this eerie and fascinating piece of gaming history. On the latest episode of The Halloween Podcast, I take a deeper look at Chiller, its development, its controversy, and why it remains such an infamous title in arcade history.
